Heat and Energy Recovery Ventilators in Portland, OR

The best way to enjoy cleaner air in a house is to allow for fresh air to circulate through it. This removes contaminant-filled air and replaces it. It’s harder to do than it sounds, since the air outside is often too cold or too hot for comfort. Opening a house to allow fresh air circulation can mean losing most all the energy used to run the heating and cooling system. But there is a way to bring in fresh air without causing energy loss and discomfort: installing a heat or energy recovery ventilator.

You can find out all you need to know about energy and heat recovery ventilators by talking to one of our comfort specialists. Clawson Heating & Air Conditioning is dedicated to providing affordable comfort to our customers in their own homes in Gresham, OR and the greater Portland area. How HRV and ERV Systems Improve Indoor Air

Fresh air circulation in residential buildings is almost an endangered species today. Homes are constructed to be almost airtight so they’ll retain energy efficiency. But this also blocks the fresh air necessary to clean out pollutants. Heat recovery ventilators (HRV systems) and energy recovery ventilators (ERV systems) allow homes to "breathe" through this airtight seal without ruining the energy efficiency of the house.

The way HRVs and ERVs do this is by harnessing the energy already used to heat and cool the air in the home and applying it to fresh outdoor air that’s brought inside. Think of this way: you’ve already paid to heat your home on a cold day with the furnace. An ERV takes this heated air and uses it to warm a current of fresh cold air from outside. The fresh air arrives pre-heated in your home, and the stale indoor air is exhausted outside. It works in reverse during hot weather: the cool air indoors lowers the temperature of the hot air outdoors.

ERV and HRV Systems Help with Air Quality and Savings

The number one advantage of having an HRV or ERV system installed in your house is that you can enjoy fresher, healthier air without seeing a massive blow to your utility bills because the AC, furnace, or heat pump had to work overtime. ERV and HRV systems can recover around 80% of the energy indoors that would otherwise have gone to waste when fresh air was allowed inside. The house not only enjoys fresher air, it won’t end up with a rush of cold or hot outside air making everyone uncomfortable.

We’ll Help You with HRV and ERV Services

An additional benefit of an energy recovery ventilator is balanced humidity. An ERV transfers moisture between the incoming and outgoing currents of air, which works in both humid and dry conditions. A heat recovery ventilator doesn’t do this, but it works better in colder conditions. You don’t have to worry if you aren’t sure which is right for your home. One of our service technicians will help you find the best option.
