5 Signs You Have a Faulty Heat Pump

More and more homes are becoming all electric. This is an energy efficient and environmentally friendly way to live. Switching over to a heat pump system is a step toward that all-electric future for your home.

We want to give you a reminder that even all-electric systems aren’t immune from the need for expert repairs. With how much more intense our seasons are becoming, this is even more important to remember too. Why? Because prompt repairs can save you from an early replacement.

Do you need a heat pump repair in Lake Oswego, OR? Here are the warnings signs that you do.

1. The heat pump can only operate in one mode.

It’s the coldest part of the year and after the holidays, the cold weather is no longer festive, it’s just cold. This is not the time of the year when you want to discover that your system isn’t heating! There is more than one reason why this can happen, from a stuck reversing valve to a refrigerant leak. Call in an expert to help determine why your heat pump can only cool things down when they are already too cold to start with.

2. The system has begun to make concerning noises.

When you run your heat pump, it won’t be completely silent. You are likely to hear the whoosh of air and the click of the thermostat turning on and off. Aside from these sounds though, there shouldn’t be a ruckus coming from your heat pump. New, loud, or concerning sounds are worth a call to a professional. These sounds include rattling, clanging, hissing, screeching, or continual clicking.

3. There are odd smells when the heat pump is operating.

You will want to keep your nose on alert as well as your ears. Maybe your heat pump isn’t making odd sounds but it’s stinking up the house. Odd smells are also a sign that something is wrong with your system. You may smell a sickly sweet scent that indicates a refrigerant leak. Or you may notice an acrid scent that indicates you have electrical parts. A heat pump that is smelly when it is operating may be one that is in need of repairs.

4. Your energy bills are way too high.

Don’t ignore the total on your energy bills. Using your heating system will impact your energy bills but this shouldn’t lead to extremely large spikes in your monthly dues. If your heat pump is malfunctioning though, it may be using up extra energy to try to get the indoor temperature under control.

5. Your heat pump is short cycling.

Short cycling occurs when the system turns on, runs for a couple of minutes, then shuts down. This isn’t enough to help with your comfort level and it is also extremely harsh on your heat pump. Short cycling can indicate a few different issues that are hindering the heating cycle.

If your heat pump is malfunctioning in one of these ways or in another way, it’s worthwhile to talk to a professional to get things checked out.
